Emma Watson

Emma Watson: From Wizarding Whiz Kid to Global Champion for Change, Businesswoman, and Sustainable Fashion Icon

London — In addition to over 15 years having passed since her last performance as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, Emma Watson is 35 years old today (she was born on April 15, 1990). One of the best-known individuals to have come out of the Harry Potter film franchise, Emma Watson is a British-born actor with French ancestry, who has taken a deliberate approach to maintain a low profile; instead of pursuing large-scale Hollywood productions, Watson has focused on education, environmental issues, charitable work, and self-care.

According to Hollywood Authentic, as of January 2026, Watson has continued to remain on a lengthy hiatus from acting; no feature films since Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019) — although Watson expressed during a September 2025 interview with Hollywood Authentic that she missed acting itself, but not the exhausting promotional duties associated with the film industry.

During this same interview, Watson stated that she had never felt “the happiest and healthiest” she could feel, referring to how much stress the constant pressure of maintaining a public persona and attending endless press tours had caused her. Watson said in the same interview, that she would “absolutely” continue to act when she found the perfect opportunity, and also suggested that she might pursue something “I’ve never done before.” Although there is nothing confirmed about Watson taking part in another film anytime soon, there are no credible rumors circulating as of early 2026 regarding an upcoming return to film.

During the early days of the Harry Potter franchise, and with her initial rise to fame

At the age of 9 Watson was spotted by the Oxford Drama Club, and she started out playing the intelligent, determined and brave, Hermione Granger in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (2001). She played the lead role in each of the eight films, developing through a global phenomenon that had reached billions and developed into one of the world’s most recognizable young actresses. Since then she has said that being part of the experience was wonderful and both magical and overwhelming at times confining.

A Post Potter Era of Different Roles & A Self-Imposed Acting Hiatus

Watson wanted to be recognized as more than just “Harry Potter” so she took on a variety of different characters: the quiet, introspective Sam in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) – a celebrity in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring (2013) – the beloved Belle in Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast (2017-a billion dollar film) – and the loving Meg March in Little Women (2019). Her stunning, golden gown from Beauty and the Beast is one of her most popular costumes ever; an iconic representation of timelessness and classic beauty.

In 2016, she revealed that she was taking an extended hiatus from acting to focus on her social activism and personal growth; and how she had been open with the public about the feelings of being “boxed in” by the expectations of the entertainment industry and needing therapy and practicing meditation and yoga to find balance in her life.

Global Advocacy and Awareness

Watson began her role as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador in 2014 and co-launched the HeForShe campaign through a viral United Nations speech asking men to advocate for gender equity. In addition to creating the feminist book club Our Shared Shelf, she supports organizations such as Time’s Up UK and supports various global initiatives including climate justice, humanitarian relief and global advocacy for issues of an intersectional nature; advocating for humanity while considering all aspects of conflict globally.

Fashion and Business Sustainability

Watson advocates for ethical fashion: through collaborations with fair trade company People Tree; as a model of sustainable style when attending the 2016 Met Gala in a gown made of recycled plastic bottles; and as a member of Kering’s Board to promote sustainability. Watson is also an editor at large of Vogue Australia, and a face of several eco-friendly campaigns for Prada. In 2023, Watson created Renais, an eco-friendly high-end gin brand, which was started with her brother Alex.

The brand uses the upcycled Grand Cru grapes from their family-owned Burgundy Vineyard to create their gin. The brand is carbon neutral and is already showing tremendous potential; after its initial launch in the United States in 2024, Renais received over $6 million in investment in 2025, and it has plans to expand into new markets such as France, Spain, Dubai, and Canada.

The Balance of Personal & Professional Life

While Watson is very private about her personal life, it has become well known that she has had to deal with issues such as being under constant media scrutiny while dating and even stated publicly that she was “self-partnered” when asked in 2019 about dating. Watson is currently pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing at Oxford University, beginning in 2023; this allows her to have both a sense of purpose and also maintain a healthy work-life balance and be true to who she is.

Her high-profile events in 2025 included attending the Cannes Film Festival for the first time since 2013, the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, and Paris Fashion Week for Miu Miu’s 2026 Spring/Summer fashion show where she exited on a motorcycle.

Here are some highlights from her Paris Fashion Week event in October 2025.
