Born on June 1, 1937 in Memphis, TN, Morgan Freeman is the youngest of five children born to Mayme Edna Revere, a teacher, and Morgan Porterfield Freeman, a barber that suffered from alcoholism. Morgan’s youth included multiple moves throughout the United States’ Southern and Midwestern regions and at one point he lived with his grandmother in rural Mississippi during the segregation era and an economically depressed time in America. Those youthful experiences shaped Morgan into a resilient person and developed an interest in story telling as a way to communicate with other people and try to understand the world.

A talent for performing surfaced early on in Freeman’s life; at a young age he performed in school plays and in a 12 year old state-wide dramatic competition in Mississippi. After finishing high school in 1955 Freeman initially considered pursuing a theater scholarship, however he decided to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. In the Air Force, Freeman held the position of Radar Technician from 1955-1959, earning the title of Airman First Class. Ultimately, this experience in the Air Force helped convince him that a career in combat was not what he wanted to do; thus, he pursued a career as an actor.

He started making money doing acting in the mid 60’s (film) and Off-Broadway plays. Then from 71 until 77 he became a National Icon thru the Children’s Educational Series “The Electric Company” in which he played colorful characters like Easy Reader who was so enthusiastic about reading. While this gave him steady employment, he was eventually looking to get into more dramatic material to escape the world of Children’s Entertainment.

Freeman rose to stardom in the 1990s, emerging as one of the world’s leading acting talents. He gave two defining performances, as a man who is both a friend and fellow prisoner in a prison movie which has become an audience favorite and as a weary, conflicted detective trying to track down a serial killer. In addition, he made a transition into directing when he made a film based on social injustices, and he also formed a film production company that produces socially relevant films and television programs from diverse perspectives. Additionally, his voice-over career was thriving in the 1990s, and his smooth, warm voice continues to be heard by millions of people today through his documentary narrations for both historical documentaries and nature documentaries.
Major Achievements

Freeman’s wide popularity in the new millennium was due to both his increasing ability to reach a broader audience through comedic films (with divine figures) and, simultaneously, the inclusion of both humor and gravitas. By playing a wise and inventive mentor/teacher, in addition to his divine role, Freeman connected with a younger generation. In a sports-drama, Freeman played a historic world leader with poise and dignity and in doing so, he conveyed a message of unity and reconciliation. During this decade, and continuing throughout the 2010s and 2020s, Freeman acted in films and TV; in addition, he was the narrator in documentary series and individual documentaries focused on science, nature, and the human condition. He also continued to be an active producer in support of diverse storytelling. Additionally, he had the lead role in several TV shows, in addition to a recurring role as a U.S. government official. And finally, at age eighty plus, there was little if any indication from Freeman that he was ready to retire, and he continued to express enthusiasm for acting.
