EARLY LIFE
Born Orpah Gail Winfrey on Jan. 29, 1954, in rural Kosciusko, Mississippi (her birth certificate incorrectly spelled her first name as “Oprah”) she was raised in a very poor environment that included being physically abused. As an infant Oprah lived with her grandmother on a farm with no inside plumbing, but she found comfort in reading and speaking before crowds of people. At this time Oprah began calling herself “The Preacher” because she would stand up in church and recite Bible verses.
At the age of 6 Oprah left her home in rural Mississippi and went to Milwaukee to live with her mother, Vernita Lee. While living with her mother, Oprah was sexually abused by members of her family who were much older than her starting when Oprah was 9 years old. When Oprah became pregnant with her child, the baby died shortly after it was born.
After Oprah had lost her second child, she was sent to live with her father, Vernon Winfrey, in Nashville, Tennessee. Her father provided her with structure and emphasized the importance of her education. She did well enough in school to win a number of scholarships and to become an honor student.
