Hollywood Shocker: Timothy Busfield latest chargeCharges
Timothy Busfield is known as a name that has given people a lot of nostalgic feelings within the entertainment world. His break-out character in the movie Revenge of the Nerds, the heartfelt portrayal in both Thirty something and The West Wing and even his directing career; have all been a part of his long-lasting career which has spanned over several decades.
Being married to actress Melissa Gilbert (who played Laura Ingalls Wilder on Little House on the Prairie) and being considered a steady, family oriented success, it was difficult to envision what could have caused that image to shatter in January 2026. It was then that the authorities in New Mexico issued a warrant for the arrest of the 68 year old for serious felony offenses including: 2 counts of Criminal Sexual Contact with a Minor and 1 count of Child Abuse. The criminal offense charges were based upon the time Mr. Busfield worked on the Fox television show entitled The Cleaning Lady.
At the time of his employment, Mr. Busfield was employed as a Director, Actor and Executive Producer. Based upon the sworn statements contained within the Court Documents and Police Affidavit, the actions of Mr. Busfield are based upon allegations of inappropriate contact with two child actors who were twins and approximately 7-8 years old at the time of the alleged incident(s); which occurred between the late 2022 time frame until early 2024 time frame. More details from the Complaint, paint a dismal picture of the events which allegedly occurred.
One of the children, stated that Mr. Busfield made contact with his private area’s, multiple times while they were filming on the set. The second child stated similar contact occurred during filming. Additionally, an anonymous complaint was filed to the SAG-AFTRA Hotline in late 2024 regarding the alleged behavior of Mr. Busfield. The complaint alleged that Mr. Busfield kissed and caressed minors, in a hair and makeup trailer. Following the filing of the complaint, an independent investigation into the allegations was conducted by Warner Bros.
Although the investigation did not produce any corroborating witness testimony in support of the allegations, the Albuquerque Police Department continued their investigation of the allegations of Mr. Busfield, after receiving the complaints from the victim’s family.
A NEW CRIMINAL CASE AGAINST BUSFIELD – DENIAL OF CHARGES BY ALLEGED VICTIMS
On January 13th, 2021, Busfield surrendered to U.S. Marshals after they had been searching for him. Upon surrendering to authorities, he was booked at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In an interview with a media outlet, he vehemently denied all of the claims made against him stating the accusations are “LIES” and speculated about motives behind why the children were never brought back for the last season of the show.
Busfield’s first court appearance occurred shortly thereafter. At this initial hearing, it was determined that Busfield would be detained without bail. However, at the pre-trial detention hearing scheduled for January 20th, 2021, a judge ruled in favor of Busfield and ordered that he be released on his own recognizance. The prosecutors stated that there were “Neutral” portions of the evidence, while Busfield’s defense team pointed out inconsistencies within the accusations, specifically pointing out prior investigations which did not support the claims of misconduct.
Melissa Gilbert attended the hearing, visibly shaken and distraught, and has since publicly supported her husband amidst growing public scrutiny surrounding the allegations — particularly resurfacing old allegations of sexual harassment dating back many years, although no charges were filed.
This case will continue to unfold, potentially resulting in a trial, civil lawsuits and/or additional information coming to light. As a result of the case unfolding, it parallels the larger discussions in Hollywood regarding the need for better safety measures for children working on film sets, and how to address the issue of power imbalances on film sets, with both the industry and fans left stunned.
