Benson Boone: Fireworks, Rollerblades, and the Heart of a Star

Benson Boone

Introduction

Benson Boone is a unique anomaly in today’s rapidly evolving pop music scene — where trends are created overnight and then quickly fade like a scrolling thumb. Boone is a digital native, who achieved viral success on TikTok but seems to be connected through his music to the classic singer-songwriter artists of the 1970s. Boone was also a reality TV contestant who gave up on being made into a star via the very show he was competing on (American Idol), only to later find far greater stardom on his own terms.

By early 2026, Benson Boone had established himself as one of the most talented vocalists of his generation, after achieving significant chart success with his hit singles “Beautiful Things”, and “In the Stars,” and after releasing two successful studio albums, Fireworks & Rollerblades and American Heart.
Boone’s journey has never been about talent alone, however. At each major fork in the road, Boone has consistently selected the path of authenticity, rather than the path of least resistance. Boone’s journey began from the quiet hills of Monroe, Washington, and now finds itself at sold-out arena shows around the world; this journey has been characterized by the raw emotional power of Boone’s voice, and a physical ability to backflip on stage with the same ease with which he sings the highest notes.

This biography will follow the path of Benson James Boone, from a young man who did not know he could sing, to an artist whose voice has become the soundtrack for millions of people worldwide.

James Benson Boone was born on June 25, 2002, in Monroe, WA, a small rural town located at the base of the Cascade Mountains.

Benson is the only male child born to Nate and Kerry Boone and has three older sisters, Kaylee, Natalee, and Emma with a younger sister named Claire. His family dynamics have had an immense influence on who he is today. The Boone family is extremely close, supportive, and faith-based in their practices. Benson’s family raised him as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which is a community based church with a strong emphasis on family values and closeness.

Monroe, WA also provided Benson with the perfect environment to foster his adventurous nature. Prior to being involved in music, Benson was physically active and loved spending time outdoors. He was not the kid locked away in his room playing scales, he was the kid jumping off cliffs into the local river, hiking throughout the dense forest of the state of Washington, and testing his body’s limits. Benson’s energy was transferred to sports in high school. He was a member of the school’s tennis team and what could be seen as a prelude to his future performance style on-stage with acrobatic elements, he was a member of the school’s competitive diving team. Diving requires the athlete to be disciplined, to have aerial awareness and to be fearless, all traits that are evident in his high-energy live performances.

The Late Starter

Benson Boone has always been a late starter musically. Many of his peer musicians have been studying vocal techniques since they were toddlers, while Boone spent the majority of his teenage years having no idea how talented he was vocally. He did play the piano by ear and liked messing around with melodies, but singing never really made it onto his to-do list. His musical upbringing was an eclectic mix of his parents’ favorite music that they’d listen to on family dinners and road trips through the 70’s and 80’s – Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Queen, and Earth, Wind & Fire, all of whom are known for their incredible vocal abilities and rich melodies. These influences obviously took hold somewhere in the back of his mind, and over time, he’d discover a talent that had been hidden for so long.
His talent finally surfaced during his junior year of high school when he decided to participate in the Battle of the Bands competition. A friend of his needed a singer for his band and asked Benson to fill-in. Benson was hesitant, but he was also happy to help out. As soon as he got behind the mic, something clicked and the voice that came out of him was not some tentative little squeaky little warbler like you see in a lot of beginning singers; rather, it was a strong, rich, resonating voice that was full of surprise in terms of its range and grit.
Boone would later tell the American Idol judges about his experience, stating, “I didn’t know I could sing until about a year ago,” “I don’t even know where it came from.” This unexpected discovery was a huge epiphany for Benson, like finding a superpower he had been carrying around in his pocket for 17 years.

The epiphany with Jon Bellion

Around that time, an additional pivotal moment in Boone’s life happened. Boone had gone to see pop singer songwriter Jon Bellion at a concert. Seeing Bellion perform, Boone was moved as much or more by the emotional connection of the performer to the audience than by the music itself. He witnessed how music can serve as a medium for telling stories and being vulnerable. Upon leaving the concert, Boone felt an overwhelming sense of clarity as to why he wanted to pursue a career in music. This experience coupled with the Battle of the Bands experience, shifted the trajectory of his life. The cliff-jumping diver was transitioning into a musician.

The Idol Anomaly (2020-2021)

TikTok Prelude
Boone attended Brigham Young University–Idaho in Rexburg after graduating from high school in 2020; however, a growing passion for music made it impossible to ignore. As did millions of other Gen Z creative types, the COVID-19 pandemic led Boone to create content on TikTok. Boone created short video clips of himself performing songs either by sitting at his piano or in informal settings. His voice—deep, raspy, soulful, and incredibly controlled—was quickly recognized by both the TikTok algorithm and users.
He gained thousands of followers within a few months; however, he was still an unknown entity in the commercial music world. Boone was identified through this online community and approached by the producers of American Idol who invited him to audition for Season 19 as an 18-year-old.

The Golden Ticket

Benson Boone performed for the American Idol judges: Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. In February 2021, he played “Punchline” by Aidan Martin. Boone’s performance was electric. His pure soulfulness (something that typically doesn’t develop until much later) is what naturally impressed the judges.
Luke Bryan was completely blown away and compared Boone’s talent to how little he had when he was that age. Lionel Richie, a man who has written countless ballads, described Boone as a “natural talent”. However, it was Katy Perry’s comment that would get all the headlines. She said to Boone “I can see you winning American Idol if you want.” She did not simply tell him he was great, she told him he could win the entire show. This was one of the most hyped entries into Hollywood since the show first started. He was being billed as the number one candidate to win the show before the competition even began.

The Withdrawal

Boone made it through Hollywood week, and then to the top 24, but he continued to struggle with an internal conflict.
His performances were consistently good and created the “swoon” factor that Perry had predicted for him. However, Boone had been looking at the history of American Idol winners. Some had gone on to be superstars (e.g. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood), while many other American Idol winners were unable to get beyond being a product of the franchise and have struggled to create their own individual artistic identity. Boone is still very new to songwriting, and was unsure of what he wanted to do as an artist. Therefore, Boone was worried about staying on the show and losing control over creating his own individual artistic identity and becoming a product of the American Idol franchise.
“After that, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in music and I did not want fans to say (or think), “Benson Boone, oh look, this guy got blown up by American Idol. That is where he came from,”” Benson said after exiting the show. “I want to be known as Benson Boone, because I write smash hits and people love my music.”
Benson shocked the producers and his increasing fan base when he announced he would be withdrawing from the competition. He was giving up on the chance to win the competition; the guaranteed record deal and millions of viewers who were watching him on television. The risk was enormous. He left the national spotlight behind to go back to his room in Monroe and attempt to write another song.

The Reynolds Connection & “Ghost Town” (2021-2022)

DM Form for A Imagine Dragons
Boone’s gamble could have gone terribly wrong and made him little more than a footnote in reality TV history. However, Boone’s early TikTok success had piqued the interest of another party; Dan Reynolds, the lead singer of the rock band Imagine Dragons.

Reynolds viewed a video of Boone singing and was impressed by the unpolished yet obvious talent. Reynolds invited Boone to Las Vegas, where he would both be signed and mentored by Reynolds. Reynolds owned Night Street Records which is a sub label of Warner Records. The meeting was a whirlwind. Boone, who had grown up listening to Imagine Dragons, now found himself in a recording studio with one of the most prominent voices in rock music.

Reynolds did not attempt to alter Boone’s style. Instead, Reynolds gave Boone a boot camp on song writing. Reynolds wanted Boone to write, to fail, to experiment and to discover his own sound. “I knew Benson was something special when I first met him,” Reynolds stated. “Benson has this natural sense of melody and a vocal ability that left me speechless.”

“Ghost Town”

This was the result of Boone’s new collaborative approach and the first release was “Ghost Town”. “Ghost Town”, released in October 2021, was an emotional ballad concerning the end of a romance. But the lyrics were mature and complex. It was not about being dumped but rather about recognizing you need to break up with someone so they can be better for themselves — “Perhaps the only reason you are unable to love yourself is because of how much you loved me.”
Boone played the drums, guitar and piano on “Ghost Town” and he actually drew the cover art by hand (a drawing of a ghost). This song was very stripped down with most of the music being a vocal performance by Boone.
There was a strong reaction to “Ghost Town.” “Ghost Town,” quickly went viral as a streamable song. It reached number one in Norway and appeared on the charts in 12 other countries. In the U.S., it marked Boone’s first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100. The success of “Ghost Town” clearly showed Boone was more than a YouTube sensation, he is a real recording artist. His decision to leave American Idol was a smart risk. He was no longer “that guy from TV,” he was “that guy who sings ‘Ghost Town.'”

Walking Him Home (2022–2023)
Grief in “In the Stars”

While “Ghost Town,” introduced Boone to the globe, it is two subsequent hit songs which solidified Boone’s position as a master of emotive ballads. On April 29th, 2022, Boone released “In the Stars.” This song was very much personal; Boone wrote this song after his great grandmother passed away at the age of 97.

Lyrics were emotionally and specifically detailed. Lyrics explained how the scent of the person loved stayed long after they passed, and how Sundays are empty when they are no longer present. Lyrics also included a line that became a global anthem for people grieving, “Now you’re in the stars, and six feet’s never felt so far.” This song achieved Multi-Platinum Status in Canada and Gold Status in U.S. The song showed Boone’s ability to reach and express universal emotions through a vulnerability that appeared older than his 20 years.

The EP Era: Walk Me Home… and Pulse

Boone’s single releases led to him releasing an EP called Walk Me Home… in the summer of 2022. The EP featured a mix of soft rock and pop ballads that showcased Boone’s vocal abilities. A second EP called Pulse was also released in 2023, which featured slightly more energetic songs than those found on Walk Me Home…. Tracks such as “Sugar Sweet,” were examples of Boone trying out a more upbeat and pop-oriented style. Boone was beginning to experiment with both the tempo and production of his music, transitioning from acoustic ballads to a larger and more suitable for a large arena or stadium sound.
Becoming a performer
During this time Boone was traveling all over the country performing. That’s the real test. A lot of social media performers fail when they have to be on a physical stage and are unable to recreate the feeling of a person being close to you in a crowded room. Boone did well.
Boone used his experience as a diver to create kinetic performances during his stage shows. He performed backflips off the risers behind the pianos, ran from one side of the stage to the other, and interacted with the audience like an experienced performer. Boone also sang live; most of his contemporaries sing with the aid of pre-recorded backing tracks. He proved that he is a “live” artist, much like the artists (like Queen) that he idolizes.

“Beautiful Things” Blows Up Worldwide (2024)

The Backdrop

In late 2023 Benson Boone’s career was well underway, with fans across the world and hundreds of millions of plays under his belt. He also had never produced that one song — that one single that is culturally impactful enough to cross all international and demographic boundaries.
That all came together for Boone in early 2024 with the release of “Beautiful Things.” Boone had been teasing the new track on TikTok for months prior to its full release. The short clips were acoustic ballads during the verses, but then they morphed into grungy choruses that could have come from a band like Green Day or Pearl Jam. The hook was raw, and spoke to something deep inside people. The lyrics of the hook read as follows — “Please stay / I want you, I need you, oh God, don’t take / These beautiful things that I’ve got” — which captured the feeling of losing the good things in your life once you’ve found them.
The Global Phenomenon
When the full version of “Beautiful Things” was released, it blew up and became unstoppable. It did not just go viral; it dominated “beautiful things” went number 1 in over five countries — the U.K., Australia, Canada, Germany and Norway. Although it reached #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart behind major artists, “beautiful things” topped the charts in most other countries around the world.

BOONE’S ALBUM FIREWORKS & ROLLERBLADES IS A SUCCESS

Album Title & Inspiration
Fireworks & Rollerblades is the title of Boone’s first studio album which he released in April 2024. He says the title represents the way his life has been since 2022.
“The fireworks represent the explosive nature of my life the past 2 years. The roller blades are the fast pace and danger I’ve faced.”
Boone describes the imagery as a rocket ship taking off. The imagery captures the thrill, excitement and danger of his rise to stardom.

Commercial Success

Fireworks & Rollerblades was a huge success both critically and commercially. His debut album debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200. In addition to “Beautiful Things” and “Ghost Town”, the album also features new songs such as “Slow It Down”, “Cry”, and “Friend”.

  • Key Tracks
“Slow It Down”: This song uses the same structure as “Beautiful Things”. It builds from a piano ballad to a full-fledged anthem with a beat. The song showcases Boone’s ability to create catchy pop anthems that are still meaningful and soulful.
  • “Cry”: One of the fans’ most beloved songs, Cry allows Boone to express himself in a more bluesy/soulful manner through his vocals. The style of Cry brings to mind early Sam Smith.
  • “In the Stars”: The song was included on the album and serves as the emotional core of the album.
The reviewers said that this was an example of an artist who had produced their first cohesive body of work. This is unusual in today’s world of streaming, where most debut albums are collections of singles and fillers rather than what can be considered to be a single cohesive work. The reviewer also stated that the music told the story of a young man finding his way through love, loss and the disorientation of being in the spotlight as he grew into a young adult.
The World Tour & Taylor Swift
Boone’s Fireworks & Rollerblades World Tour served as a supporting effort for the album. The tour filled many major venues in North America, Europe and Australia. Such was the demand, some venues were required to upgrade their facilities to accommodate fans who wanted to see Boone perform.
One highlight of this time for Boone was being selected as an opening act for Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour in London at Wembley Stadium. With 90,000 screaming fans, Boone demonstrated that his sound could fill even the world’s largest venues. His earnestness and vocal abilities also won him fans from among the “Swifties,” and his fan base grew greatly as a result.

American Heart and the Arena Era (2025-2026)
The Sophomore Leap

Most artists experience a significant hiatus before beginning their sophomore cycle. Boone, however, is a songwriter with a fast-paced career; thus, he chose not to wait. At the start of 2025 Boone began releasing teasers regarding upcoming material. Those teasers eventually led to the release of his second full-length album, American Heart.

As stated earlier, American Heart showed a mature side of the Boone sound. Where Fireworks & Rollerblades centered on the chaos of fame and youth, American Heart took on a more stable tone. The production of American Heart was rich and featured more live instruments than Fireworks & Rollerblades (i.e., live drums, strings, and guitars). American Heart also leaned more toward the “Classic Rock” of Boone’s childhood than Fireworks & Rollerblades.
Singles such as “Mystical Magical” demonstrated a more playful, or almost Beatles-esque style in terms of melody; while the title track dealt with issues of home, and one’s sense of identity. The album was well-received as a very solid second release, avoiding what is commonly known as the “second album slump.”

The American Heart World Tour

Boone started touring for his album in the summer of 2025. This was his first arena tour and included performances at top venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York and The O2 Arena in London. By doing so Boone became a major league act.
This tour ran through March 2026. The tour itself was very large scale and included the most elaborate stage design yet and physically demanding performances by Boone. Reviewers praised Boone’s ability to perform consistently, delivering studio quality vocals every night and performing high energy stunts. By early 2026 Benson Boone was no longer a promising up and coming artist. He was now a global superstar with many hit songs, and one of the most impressive live performers in pop music.

Artistry and Influence

The Voice
Boone’s primary instrument is his voice. Boone has a tenor voice of great agility. Boone also has a breathy, intimate falsetto that brings the listener in, and he can quickly switch to a gritty, powerful belt. His dynamic range gives Boone the opportunity to express a wide variety of emotions in each song. Boone’s critics have compared his vocal placement to Dan Reynolds (his mentor), and his emotional delivery to Adele and Lewis Capaldi.

Writing Philosophy

Boone’s songwriting is defined as being emotionally direct. Instead of using metaphorical ways to describe something (he calls this “cryptic”), he uses truth and relates directly to people. He also has said he prefers to write songs in the middle of the emotion, and therefore does not write about things after they have happened (he refers to this type of writing as “diaristic”). The reason for this is that it allows him to express his emotions immediately, giving the listener an immediate connection to what he is trying to express.

Bringing Back the Power Ballad

In a time of “vibey”, low fi pop music, Benson Boone has played a large role in bringing back the “power ballad”. Boone is not afraid of big choruses, key changes and/or dramatic crescendos. This is another way he has added a sense of theatricality back into top 40 music, and will hopefully create a bridge between the rock anthems of the 1970’s and the pop production of today.

Conclusion

Benson Boone’s experience is a great example of believing in oneself. In 2021 Boone made the decision to get out of an American Idol hotel room, and leave the show. Most aspiring musicians would probably consider leaving the show crazy, but Boone took a chance on himself. He believed in his unique voice, the strength of his songwriting and his dedication to creating music to be successful without the help of the American Idol machine.
Five years later, the dividend on that bet has been exponentially greater than anything anyone anticipated. Since the cliffs of Monroe to the stage at Wembley, Boone has always remained true to who he is. He is the diver who learned how to fly, the boy who did not have any idea he had a voice for singing until he spoke and the whole world stopped to hear him speak. As he continues touring America with his American Heart tour in 2026, Benson Boone is no longer searching for the beauty; he is now creating it, one song at a time.
